May 9-10, 2025, Yerevan, Armenia
The Anatolia-Caucasus-Iran region is renowned for its rich tapestry of multi-ethnic and multilingual communities. This vast area, where Indo-European, Turkic, and Caucasian languages have coexisted and interacted for centuries, offers unparalleled insights into the dynamics of linguistic phenomena. From substrate-superstrate-adstrate relationships to the emergence of language unions (Sprachbunds) such as the Armenian-Turkic-Caucasian and South Caucasian-Aturpatakan Iranian Sprachbunds, the linguistic complexity of this region is intricately tied to its ethnographic diversity.
This conference aims to explore the intersection of language and ethnicity in this unique context, addressing questions such as how the language interactions have shaped the linguistic landscape of this region, what role does language play in the articulation of ethnic identity, how do specific language phenomena, such as Sprachbund formations, illuminate the historical and cultural exchanges among the region’s diverse populations, etc.
We invite scholars at all stages of their academic and professional journeys to submit proposals for papers and panels addressing any aspect of the ethnography and linguistics of Anatolia, the Caucasus, and Iran. Selected papers will be considered for publication in the journal Iran and the Caucasus (
https://brill.com/view/journals/ic/ic-overview.xml) or as a separate volume of the conference proceedings in the Series Iran and the Caucasus Monographs (
